SEKEM is an Egyptian initiative that seeks to realize development of the individual, society and environment by means of a holistic concept which includes economic, social and cultural dimensions. In 1977 the SEKEM initiative started in the desert 60 km northeast of Cairo. Using agroecological farming methods, desert land was revitalized and agriculture flourished. Over the years, SEKEM has became the umbrella of a multifaceted group which nowadays includes, among other things, large farming lands on 4 desert-locations, a cooperation with some 800 biodynamic farms, a microcredit program, a variety of agro-processing factory’s delivering medical plants & herbs, tea’s, cotton products, fruits and vegetables; a medical center, a school, a University and a research center.On May 16th, Helmy Abouleish, the CEO of Sekem, will come to Wageningen to present SEKEM as a model for an agriculture for the future. Several experts from Wageningen from the fields of soil quality and land dynamics will be present to discuss both the technical and social significance of the SEKEM initiative and discuss the possibilities for upscaling the SEKEM methods to other regions.
